Excerpts from Cowgirl Sass and Savvy

Holding herd is not executive work

Time tends to drag when you are holding herd. You'll see the pocket knives come out as herd holders begin to carve on the calluses on their hand or clean their finger nails like there will be a hygiene inspection later.
The tobacco can lids flash in the sun as chews are freshened. The athletics of spitting in every direction including between your horses ears is a skill worthy of an Olympic event.

Load up!

Still in joking mode, she moved to the end of the trailer and unlatched the trailer gate. The calf was still coming and at a very fast clip. She threw the gate back just in time for the calf to jump into the trailer.
Nancy began claiming "Top Hand" honors when they realized someone probably ought to close the trailer gate. Of course, then the discussion of where the credit was due began. Greg was sure he should have all the honors because he positioned the trailer just right on the road.

Getting old ain't for sissies

A life of having horses pound you into the ground, cows run you over and assortment of other wrecks involving, ropes, gates, pickups and trailers have cowboys feeling some serious aches and pains at an early age.
They hobble around dragging a leg, thinking everything they see looks like it needs to be set on and giving the anti-inflammatory drug business a dramatic boost in sales and steady stock value.

Endorsement

I've been working with Independent Authors since retiring from New York publishing where I spent more than twenty-five years with Random House and the Time Warner Book Group.

Julie's book is the BEST I have seen in these past four years! Her writing is spectacular, her stories are witty, funny, and gives you exactly what she promises.

I would highly recommend her book to anyone. This first edition could easily become a collectors dream. Julie is destined for greatness and you can be among the first to say, I bought the first printing of her first book!

Know the cowgirl by the swish of her fringe

Both women wore the same basic functional clothing, just with different style. Both wore chinks but Lynn's were decorated with manure and orange marker chalk while Billie Jo's had silver conchos and long swishy fringe.
Lynn always had a piggin' string in her belt in case she needed to tie up a gate or the muffler on the pickup to keep it from dragging. Billie Jo had two in her belt and two more bandolier style across her shoulder giving her a punchy look unequaled by any male counterpart.
Billie Jo was regarded as a real deal, turkey feather in her hat, britches-in-her-boots puncher. Lynn was labeled as her husband's little helper.

Two women and a blind cow

The roping was the easy part. The getting her in the trailer turned into a battle of wits, cuss words and strained body parts. The cow, while not wild, was not cooperative in the least. With no help whatsoever from her; we got her snubbed up close enough to have her head in the trailer and great hopes of finding a way to get the rest of her to follow.
We seemed to have an adequate amount of "know how" but fell considerably short with the physical ability to execute the plan.

¡Vamonos! Editor

Julie Carter has penned a gem of a book, Cowgirl Sass & Savvy - rich in wit, true to life and very sassy, indeed. The stories found inside this debut collection of essays are taken from observations of people she has known, loved and laughed with, and from careful self-observation, as well.

Carter relates her stories with a sense of the ironic, and with a knack for finding the humor in everyday life, even in situations that many of us would find ourselves reacting to with frustration, anger or maybe even hopelessness. None of that for this cowgirl. She also has a knack for drawing the reader into the world she loves - of cowboys, cowgirls, ranch hands, and, of course, ranch wives.

The "Little Pretty" is a recurring character, along with "Livestock Man," of course. As Carter recounts experiences of spouses attempting to work together in the often gnarly world of ranch life, she turns the predictable blunders and struggles into analogies for everyday life experiences that are ultimately uplifting, optimistic and always funny. Life on the rodeo circuit and ranch dogs, holidays and family reunions, braggers and boasters, and even pickup trucks are the vehicles for her humorous observations that are timeless reflections on life.

Even for a city girl like me, the stories resonate with a universal quality not found in many books with a Western theme. And she forges a bond with her readers, inviting them to experience her world through her stories, sharing her particular brand of "Cowgirl Philosophy."

She speaks to all of us, male or female, ranch hand or city slicker, and makes us see the beauty of the little blessings life brings tucked in with the ordinary. The book also features Carter's beautiful photographs, which often grace the pages of ¡Vamonos!

As she says on her Web site, "for a first-hand, genuine look into the lives of cowboys and the women who love them, grab a cup and sit a spell. The pages of Cowgirl Sass and Savvy will give you the chance to see it all like you have not thought to see it before."

Julie Carter's column appears each Friday in the Ruidoso News.
